Human growth hormone (HGH) therapy is a medical treatment used to replace or supplement the body's natural production of growth hormone. If you have been prescribed HGH therapy, it is important to understand the proper procedure for administering the injections. This article will provide a step-by-step guide to help you safely and effectively administer HGH injections at home. Please note that this is a general guide of how things are often done, but specific instructions from our board-certified physicians as a part of your customized therapy should always override the general instructions here.
Before beginning HGH therapy, it is important to gather all necessary supplies. You will need:
- HGH medication in the form of a powder and diluent (bacteriostatic water)
- Syringe
- Alcohol pads
- Band-aids
- A sharps container for disposal of used needles
It's important to note that HGH is sensitive to light, heat, and humidity. It should always be stored in the refrigerator. Be sure to check the expiration date of your medication before using it.
Step 1: Prepare the medication
The first step in administering an HGH injection is to prepare the medication. HGH is supplied as a powder that must be reconstituted (mixed) with the diluent (bacteriostatic water) before it can be injected. To do this, you will need to follow the instructions provided with your medication. Generally, you will need to:
- Clean the top of the HGH vial and the diluent vial with an alcohol pad.
- Draw the appropriate amount of diluent into a syringe.
- Inject the diluent into the HGH vial and gently swirl the vial to mix the contents.
- Draw the appropriate amount of medication into the syringe.
- Check for any particles in the syringe and if there are any, discard the medication and prepare a new one. (It is always good to do these procedures in a nice and clean environment.)
Step 2: Choose an injection site
The next step is to choose an injection site. The most common sites for HGH injections are the stomach, thigh, and upper arm. Choose a site that is clean and free of cuts or irritation. Rotate the injection site (in other words, choose a different site) each time you give yourself an injection to avoid irritation.
Step 3: Administer the injection
Once the medication is prepared and the injection site is chosen, you can administer the injection. To do this, you will need to:
- Clean the injection site with an alcohol pad.
- Pinch a small area of skin and fat at the injection site between your thumb and index finger.
- Hold the syringe like a pencil, with the needle pointing up.
- Insert the needle into the skin at a 90-degree angle.
- Slowly push the plunger to inject the medication.
- Remove the needle from the skin and apply a band-aid to the injection site.
Step 4: Dispose of needles and syringes It is important to dispose of needles and syringes properly to prevent injury and the spread of infection. Used needles and syringes should be placed in a sharps container, which can be purchased at most pharmacies. Once the container is full, it should be sealed and disposed of as per local regulations.
It is common to feel anxious or stressed about administering injections, especially if you're doing it for the first time. Injections can also cause pain, discomfort or swelling at the injection site. The best way to deal with this is to educate yourself about the process and keep a positive attitude towards the therapy.
Since the process of self-administering injections can be daunting for some people, leading to feelings of anxiety and stress, let’s review a few tips that can help. To help alleviate these feelings, some individuals may find it helpful to create a ritual around the injection process. This can include things like lighting candles, drinking hot cocoa or soy milk, meditating, and listening to soft music.
The use of candlelight and soft music can create a soothing and calming environment, which can help to reduce feelings of anxiety and stress. Cocoa or your favorite healthy beverage can also have a relaxing effect and help to take the edge off. Meditating prior to the injection can also help to calm the mind and ease feelings of anxiety.
It is important to note that while these methods may help to alleviate feelings of anxiety, they should not be used as a replacement for professional medical care. If you are experiencing significant anxiety or distress related to self-administering HGH injections, make sure you speak to your board-certified doctor at our clinic about it.
Always remember that self-administering HGH without a prescription is illegal and can cause serious health issues. The only safe way to undergo HGH therapy is to 1) get tested (our clinic can do that for you easily and fast) and 2) get a custom program prescribed just for you by our medical professionals. Self-diagnosis and medication without a prescription can be very dangerous as well as against the law.
It is also important to remember that everyone's experience with HGH therapy is different. Many people experience minimal to no side effects, while others may experience more significant ones. If you experience any severe side effects or have any concerns about your treatment, contact your team of board-certified physicians at our clinic immediately.
