New Jersey

New Jersey is one of the smallest states by geography (8,722.58 square miles, which makes it the fourth-smallest state in the United States). But it has a population of 8,882,190 as of 2019, which makes the Garden State the most densely populated state in the country. With that many people crammed into that small of an area, New Jersey is packed with dozens of must-see attractions. From natural parks and historical sites to exciting cities, cultural places, and natural beauty, New Jersey has it all.

Here are a few of the attractions in New Jersey that are beckoning for your attention:

  • Atlantic City and The Boardwalk. A famous coastal resort town, Atlantic City, is best known for its famous Boardwalk, which was the first boardwalk in the United States. Four-miles long, the boardwalk was constructed in 1870 and is still where the action is. Among its most popular tourist spots is Steel Pier, an amusement park with a carnival theme that has a huge observation wheel with climate-controlled gondolas that gives awesome views over the city and the ocean. While you’re there, stop at the Entrance to the Stars, and see handprints of celebrities such as Frank Sinatra. Atlantic City is also home to several historical and cultural attractions, including Absecon Lighthouse, an aquarium, the House of Blues, and the Ripley's Believe It or Not! Museum. Atlantic City is considered the "Gambling Capital of the East Coast," so if you’re feeling lucky, there are many casinos for you to roll the dice.
  • Liberty State Park. With a breathtaking view of the Upper New York Bay, Liberty Island, and Ellis Island (home to New York's Statue of Liberty), Liberty State Park encompasses 1,212 waterside acres. The park also has several attractions of its own, including Communipaw Cove, a 36-acre tidal salt marsh, many fascinating memorials and monuments, and the solemn Empty Sky, a memorial consisting of two 210-foot-long steel walls with the names of those victims of the tragic events of 9/11 who had ties to New Jersey.
  • Liberty Science Center. While you are in the area of Liberty State Park, don’t forget to check out the Liberty Science Center. This educational and entertaining science museum offers numerous fascinating hands-on exhibits relating to science and technology. The planetarium conducts regular shows that explore the night sky and outer space and will deepen your knowledge of astronomy. Additional offerings include displays about robotics, engineering, bees, energy, and many more scientific and technological topics.
  • Cape May County Park & Zoo. Located at the southern tip of the Cape May Peninsula, where Delaware Bay meets with the Atlantic Ocean, this park and zoo is a favorite attraction for families due to its broad range of activities. The zoo is stacked with dozens of both native and exotic species. Don’t forget to sign up for the guided tour, which will give you a behind-the-scenes look at caring for the animals. Cape May is a very magnificent and vibrant city. Cape May is also home to several sensational museums and lighthouses such as Cape May Firemen's Museum, Cape May Lighthouse, or the Colonial House.
  • Thomas Edison National Historical Park. Today, we take electricity for granted. But the next time you experience a power surge and are left in the dark, take a moment to remember the man responsible for our ability to extend the day into the night: Thomas Edison. A must-see when visiting New Jersey is the former home and laboratory of the state's most famous son, Thomas Edison, located in West Orange. Check out the place where miracle technologies such as movie cameras, sound recordings, and batteries were born, and spend time learning all about the inventions this visionary genius created that changed the world forever. Highlights of a visit include a close-up look at the labs, vintage movies, and original artifacts, as well as a chance to tour Glenmont, Edison's magnificent mansion. Guided and audio tours are available for both sites. Do your best to arrive early since tickets for Glenmore are on a first-come-first-served basis.
  • Battleship New Jersey. Located in Camden, the Battleship New Jersey is the US Navy's most decorated vessel. It is now a floating museum enjoying its retirement on the Delaware River. Launched in 1942, the New Jersey was one of the largest battleships ever built. All through the ship, you'll see countless exhibits and displays explaining the ship's engagement in conflict zones from WWII to the Middle East in the 1980s. Stand on the same bridge where Admiral Halsey commanded the Pacific Fleet and stare in awe at its huge 16-inch guns. Also, consider spending a night aboard the ship and gain a deep appreciation for the sacrifice and bravery of our sailors. You can also climb up and down the steep stairs and eat in the original mess halls.
  • Ocean City. This is the place to relax and enjoy miles of sparkling ocean and bay beaches, all fastidiously maintained. The boardwalk offers many family attractions like Gillian's Island Golf & Water Park, Wonderland Pier, and music pier. Also, hop on the 140-foot Ferris wheel and enjoy the view of Ocean City and the nearby areas.
  • Six Flags Great Adventure and Wild Safari. Located in Jackson, Six Flags has it all: Three categories of rides, exciting events, and numerous ways to stay entertained. The Six Flags Great Adventure & Wild Safari is one of the best family-friendly attractions in New Jersey. Hungry? Stop at Johnny Rockets Shakes & Fries.
  • Casino Pier and Breakwater Beach Water Park. If you are in New Jersey, make this location as a mandatory stop. With its state-of-the-art rides and spectacular views of the surrounding area from the park's 170-feet tall Skyscraper, the kids will love the pier and park.
  • Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. The Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area straddles the border between New Jersey and Pennsylvania and includes a prominent stretch of the Delaware River. There are two visitor centers to access the recreation area: Millbrook Village, which resembles a 19th-century community with displays of traditional crafts, and the Kittatinny Point Visitor Center, with many exhibits, impressive views, and an approach point for the Appalachian Trail. If you enjoy canoeing, kayaking, swimming, fishing, and camping, this is the place!
  • A Guide to the Heritage Glass Museum An historical museum dedicated to preserving the heritage of the glass industry in the region. The glass industry has it's beginnings in 1779 when Solomon Stanger and his family, migrated from Dorhagen, Germany, and established a glassworks here. The museum traces the history of the glass industry in the area. Examples of historic bottles, glass, and similar items are on display. The Heritage Glass Museum is pledged to the retrieval, preservation, and exhibition of historical glass, containers, and related glass products, which connects the past and the present, and provides a connection to local history.
  • Grounds For Sculpture If you are an art lover (or nature lover), stopping at the Grounds for Sculpture not optional, A a 42-acre museum and sculpture park in the town of Hamilton, in Mercer County the Grounds were established in 1992 and are dedicated to the appreciation of contemporary sculpture. The Grounds have become one of the state's most famous art exhibits, boasting 270 large-scale works by many US artists. In addition to the statues, the park itself is marvelously landscaped with many trees and flowerbeds.
  • Princeton and the Battlefield State Park The college town of Princeton owes its international reputation to its university and research institutes, notably the Institute for Advanced Study, where Albert Einstein carried out his seminal work. Another important historic site is Princeton Battlefield State Park, the 200-acre location of the Battle of Princeton of 1777, which resulted in Washington's victory over the British. There are other highlights to see here, such as the Clarke House Museum, constructed in 1772, and used as a hospital by troops from both sides of the conflict, the Ionic Colonnade, and a memorial marking the graves of British and American soldiers. Princeton
  • The Adventure Aquarium. Located in Camden, and known as one of the best aquatic educational facilities in the United States, this two-million-gallon aquarium is home to more than 8,500 marine animals. It also has the distinction of being the only aquarium in the world with hippos. You can watch the penguins, hippos, sharks, or the over 25 species of African birds. In addition to observing animals in their habitats, the aquarium allows visitors to view these creatures up close, including African penguins, sea turtles, and an in-water encounter with sharks and stingrays.
  • Monmouth Battlefield State Park. The site of one of the most significant battles of the American Revolution took place here. A reenactment of the June 1778 battle is held every year with authentically dressed troops camped out and strategically placed in the fields for action.
