Michigan

With a rich history, fascinating geography, and booming tourist industry, Michigan offers a broad range of “must-see’ attractions and should be on everyone’s list of vacation destinations. Michigan’s many shorelines are filled with maritime museums and more than 100 colorful lighthouses. Michigan has activities to keep families entertained, from culinary and brewery attractions to wine tasting, amusement parks, water parks, zoos, and historical sites.

A leisurely drive a long the Great Lakes shoreline will give you the chance to drop in on the numerous lighthouses that have guided countless ships through the at times treacherous waters of the great lakes. Here is a look at a few of the many alluring sites to see in the state whose name comes from the Ojibwe word mishigami, meaning "large water" or "large lake":

  • Mackinac Island offers a look at a historic period and a simpler way of life, before cars and buses. Located in Mackinac City, tourists can hop on a convenient ferry to the island and spend the day strolling through the attractions of the old town, taking a tour of the island on a horse-drawn carriage, hiking the hills, or visiting The Mackinac Bridge Museum. The museum is packed with many fascinating and original artifacts from the construction of the iconic bridge known as “The Mighty Mac.” Opened in 1957, the nearly 5-mile bridge connects the Lower Peninsula at Mackinaw City to the Upper Peninsula at St. Ignace. One of the world’s longest suspension spans, it ended the traffic logjam of vehicles waiting for ferry passage across the straits. The bridge is a frequent transportation route a long a major highway, but also a popular tourist destination for sightseeing and recreation. Over 10,000 vehicles cross the toll bridge every day, utilizing the four lanes of traffic. The Mackinac Bridge Walk is a tradition that began one year after the bridge opened and has become an annual event attracting thousands of people to march across the bridge.
  • While you are in the neighborhood, don’t forget to visit Fort Mackinac (Colonial Michilimackinac). The fort was a French fur-trading village and military outpost that operated from 1715 until 1781 when it was annihilated by fire. The location is now home to 14 fully restored and authentically furnished buildings, one of which is the oldest in Michigan. Truly a living history museum, the attraction offers a broad range of activities. Tour guides in full regalia work and go about their day as they would have in the late 1700s, from farming and cooking chores to musket and marching drills. The Soldiers Barracks, Post Hospital and the Post Guardhouse will bring to life the daily routines from more than 200 years ago. The kids will love the children's area dedicated to engaging younger historians in learning about 18th-century life.
  • Detroit Zoo The Detroit Zoo has a wide array of animals in many habitats representing the entire planet. African animals live either in the forest or grasslands and include everything from aardvark to zebra, with familiar favorites like giraffes, lions, lemurs, gorillas, baboons, and chimps. The arctic area is home to the massive, impressive polar bears, and the Australian Outback has several kangaroos and two wallabies. The exotic Asian Forest features red pandas and Amur tigers, while the North American habitats feature some of this continent's most riveting animals, including bears, wolverines, and bald eagles. The zoo also houses reptile and amphibian centers, an aviary home to both common and exotic birds, and a fine art collection.
  • Isle Royale National Park Isle Royale is an upper-Michigan attraction that borders Lake Superior close to the Canadian frontier. Formed during the Ice Age, this 432-square-mile island is indeed a frontier with several lakes, streams, and dense forests. Teeming with wildlife, this relatively unspoiled tract of country is the perfect destination for those looking for a remote wilderness adventure. As a bonus, you will need to get to the island by boat or seaplane, which adds to the excitement of the journey.
  • Motown Historical Museum. The Motown explosion changed the music world forever, and here is the epicenter of where it all began. The Motown Historical Museum, or Hitsville, is a photo studio-turned-recording studio where many timeless hits originated and allows visitors to get an inside look at the beginning of the Motown record label. The museum exhibits memorabilia collected from top Motown artists such as Michael Jackson and the Jackson 5, Diana Ross and the Supremes, Stevie Wonder, and Smokey Robinson. Visitors can see a range of objects and displays from original costumes, music, photos, and films.
  • Detroit Institute of Arts The Detroit Institute of Arts is known for its expansive collection of humanity's creative works from the earliest cultures through today. With thousands of works of art in over 100 galleries, artists from all across the globe are featured. The museum's Islamic art collection includes examples of pottery, stone, and bronze, and there are premier models from Classical Antiquity, medieval Europe, Oceania, Africa, and the Americas. Among the most coveted European works are paintings by Picasso, Rembrandt, Matisse, and Van Gogh.
  • Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore and Lake Michigan. Here is a fascinating geological fact. In spite of being the third-largest of the great lakes, Lake Michigan is the only one of the great lakes that entirely borders the continental United States. This also gives Michigan the distinction of having the second-longest shoreline of all 50 states. Stop at the Michigan Maritime Museum in South Haven and discover why the lake is so crucial to the ecology of the region. There are many boat tours for sightseeing, and the lake's islands are a popular destination, with the Beaver Island Archipelago and the Manitou Islands as tourist favorites.
  • Belle Isle is an island park owned by the city of Detroit and located in the center of the Detroit River. The island is connected to Detroit by the famous MacArthur Bridge. There are many interesting sights and scenes on the island such as the Belle Isle Conservatory, the Belle Isle Aquarium, a museum, and a nature center. The island features outdoor recreation, and is a favorite spot for picnics, boating, cycling, and golfing, and provides several scenic viewpoints of the Detroit skyline.
  • The Henry Ford Museum. The museum explores not only the genius of the auto legend but also the American spirit of innovation and 18th-century life. Time-travel at historic Greenfield Village, and experience living in the 19th century. Attractions include working farms, a restaurant with an 1830’s menu, the train depot where you can catch a ride on a steam-powered locomotive, and ride in a Model T. The Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation tells the story of inventors and forward-thinkers who created out modern-day technology marvels.
  • The Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum. The haunting dirge of the song “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald” serves as a grim reminder of the frightening power of the angry great lakes – a power worse than the great oceans, according to many sailors who have braved both waters. The Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum is loaded with objects collected from famed shipwrecks that happened in the Great Lakes. If you’re interested in the history of the Great Lakes maritime and some of the infamous ships that sailed its waters, the museum is a definite “must-see.”
  • Soo Locks Boat Tour. If you ever wondered how freight ships pass from the US to Canada via Lake Superior, this boat tour lets you experience the thrill of the lock system. A large ship will pick you up from one of two docks before entering the American Locks. Water fills up the lock to raise the boat elevation higher to continue its journey. The tour exits through the Canadian Locks. Along the way, you’ll learn about the history of the area, the Soo Locks, and how they function.
  • Located in Lansing, the Michigan History Center is the perfect place to dive deeply into Michigan’s colorful history. The Michigan History Center includes two attractions, the Michigan History Museum and the Archives of Michigan. Visitors can take guided or self-guided tours through each section. You'll learn everything about the state, starting from the geological formation of the Great Lakes region and Native Americans who inhabited the area. It also covers more recent histories of the state, such as the Henry Ford assembly line, Motown, and other industrial movements. The museum exhibits a variety of artifacts, relics, and interactive displays to make it a fun and entertaining attraction for the entire family.
  • Windmill Island. Located in Holland, Windmill Island allows you to travel to the Netherlands without actually traveling to the Netherlands. Tulips, gardens, flowers, and a 125-foot tall authentic Dutch windmill, DeZwaan, that dates back to the 1760s and was brought from the Netherlands in 1964 are among the checklist of things to see at this relaxing island.
